We usually agree a rate with each client as this seems to suit people best. See WHAT WE DO to figure out what you need. Then contact us and we can talk about what happens next.
For example, for editing a book, we’d ask you to supply sample text and we’d do an assessment of how much time might be involved in the project. We will then supply an estimate, containing:
- Details of your book.
- D-day – the deadline day for you to send in all your files.
- Proof day – date when we will send you the 1st
- Suggested dates for a follow-up proof if it’s necessary – most books, animations etc. go to two or three proofs.
- The estimated total amount due at the end of the project.
There is only one proviso – the job price might have to be re-negotiated mid-project, if for some reason the project brief changes and there are substantial alterations. This would usually mean that the hours put in by everyone involved would increase and that would need to be reflected in the price.
We realise in these difficult times that many publishers and authors are working to a budget and cannot go over that. We’re always willing to look at any proposed fee and do our best to match it.
Rates
Every project or piece of text is unique so the rates listed below are just a general guideline to give you an idea of the fees that can apply. They have been established by AFEPI Ireland (Association of Freelance Editors, Proofreaders and Indexers). Aoife Barret is a full member.
The figures include a range of pace (words per hour) and rate per 1,000 words as editing projects can vary greatly in complexity.
The rates listed below give an outline charge per hour depending on the complexity of the text. If you would prefer to negotiate a job price instead that’s not a problem.
These suggested minimum rates are offered as guidelines and are provided for information purposes only.

For a fee you can consult Barrett Editing on:
- Your approach to publishers – first chapter (limited to 10,000 words) and synopsis.
- Copyright law and protecting your copyright.
- Royalties – your entitlements, rates to expect and how to secure the best deal.
- Your author contract and the publisher.
For other services such as, commissioning artwork, picture research and copyright clearance, we can either work on an hourly rate or it can be built into a project management fee.
